How to Choose the Right Dog Food

With shelves crowded by competing brands, marketing claims, and flashy packaging, picking the right food for your dog can be overwhelming. Here is what we have learned in over 35 years of helping pet families find what actually works.

What actually matters in dog food

Look for real, named protein sources at the top of the ingredient list — chicken, beef, lamb, or specific fish — rather than vague terms like meat by-products. Quality protein supports muscle maintenance, immune function, and energy at every life stage.

Skip foods loaded with artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. These add nothing nutritionally and may cause sensitivities in some dogs. The premium brands we carry — Fromm, Nutrisource, Verus, Earthborn, Zignature, and others — share a philosophy of clean, transparent ingredient lists.

Life stage and special needs

Puppies need higher protein, fat, and DHA for healthy growth. Adult dogs need balanced maintenance nutrition. Seniors benefit from joint support, easier digestion, and adjusted calories for a slower metabolism. If your dog has specific issues like itchy skin, digestive sensitivity, weight challenges, or food intolerances, the categories above will help you find a formula designed for that.

Switching foods? Go gradually.

Even the best food can cause upset stomachs if introduced too quickly. Mix 25% new food with 75% old food for a few days, then 50/50, then 75/25, then transition fully. Most dogs adjust well within 7 to 10 days. If digestive issues persist beyond that, the food may not be the right fit — and that is information worth having.
